The current documentation ('Novell Documentation'
(at the bottom)) suggests an imagesize of around 86*86 for photos that
are to be displayed with the detail-portlet (fx. the organizational
chart).

I'm currently developing an application that will save the images of
various users in the filesystem as jpg's. The application will resize
them and save them with the name [usercn].jpg with a quality of 100.

Is 86*86 still the size to go for? (I'll keep the aspect of the
original).

If I'm not mistaken this should result in a filesize of about 10kbytes
pr. image.
(Based on the numbers from: given 'JPEG - Wikipedia, the free
encyclopedia' (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPEG#JPEG_files:) "For full
quality images (Q=100), about 8.25 bits per color pixel is required." +
some header info...)
